The federal government recently created a special enrollment period for health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act that will be open through May 15. Maine is one of 14 states that runs its own ACA Marketplace.

Any U.S. resident who makes less than $51,040 a year, or $104,800 for a family of four, can qualify for subsidized premiums.

Those enrolling in a private insurance plan through the program are guaranteed to receive comprehensive coverage, with no pre-existing condition exclusions. All plans cover essential benefits, including doctor and hospital visits, prescription drugs, mental health treatment and maternity care. Consumers will also receive free preventive care services, such as immunizations and health screenings. Testing and treatment of COVID-19 are considered essential health benefits and are covered by all plans.

Maine residents may also be eligible for comprehensive health coverage through MaineCare, Maine’s Medicaid program.
