Whole Oceans announced May 21 it has completed a purchase and sale agreement with American Iron and Metal (AIM) for a parcel of property on the site of the former Verso paper mill in Bucksport. The company anticipates breaking ground later this year on a land-based recirculating aquaculture system for raising Atlantic salmon

Whole Oceans plans initially to produce 5,000 metric tons (MT) of Atlantic salmon annually, quickly growing to 10,000 MT, and later to a full capacity of 20,000 MT per year on the Bucksport site. Another land-based salmon farm planned for construction in Belfast by Nordic Aquafarms would produce 30,000 MT at full capacity. Whole Oceans announced it is also actively seeking sites for production on the West Coast.
