All local Social Security offices are closed to the public for in-person service in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Secure online services remain available at socialsecurity.gov. Local offices will continue to provide services by phone.

Those who need help from Social Security can visit the online services section of socialsecurity.gov. It is possible to apply for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits online, check the status of an application or appeal, request a replacement Social Security card (in most areas), print a benefit verification letter and more. The site also includes answers to most questions.

Those who cannot conduct their Social Security business online may consult the website’s field office locator for specific information about how to directly contact a local office. Local offices are still able to help callers apply for benefits, answer questions, and provide other services over the phone.

The agency will call people who already have an in-office appointment scheduled. Those with a hearing scheduled will also receive phone calls. Calls may come from a private number rather than from a U.S. government phone. Those who receive calls are asked to remember that legitimate Social Security employees will not issue threats or ask for any form of payment.

Those who cannot complete Social Security business online can call (800) 772-1213; TTY (800) 325-0778.
