This is a letter of thanks to Frank Grande, a visitor to Camden from Long Island, for his advice in the April 6 Free Press on how to make Camden a better place. Unfortunately, it appears that Mr. Grande was misinformed about the basic characteristics of Mainers. While many of us are indeed “socially and environmentally conscious,” as he thinks of us, many more are either stubbornly independent, focused on the importance of everyone minding their own business, or both. Our town governments, alas, have neither the inclination nor the resources to enforce the tidiness of their citizens.

I would therefore counsel Mr. Grande to give up on his well-intentioned hopes of making Maine a perfect place and on his plans for buying property here. Better for him to return to Long Island where everything is done properly, sensibly, and to his liking.

Respectfully submitted,

Charlie Graham, Camden
