Knox County Democratic Committee (KCDC) will host a Town Hall Meeting on Friday, February 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Watts Hall, 174 Main Street, Thomaston.

State Senate President Troy Jackson (D-Senate District 1) and State Senator Rebecca Millett (D-Senate District 29) will discuss the new Senate bill sponsored by Millett, “An Act to Support Healthy Workplaces and Healthy Families by Providing Earned Paid Sick Leave to Certain Employees” (LD 369). All are welcome to attend the meeting.

If enacted as currently written, the bill would create a “right to earned paid sick leave for employees who are employed by an employer that employs more than five employees. The bill also creates a right to earned unpaid sick leave for employees of an employer that employs five or fewer employees.” The bill would take effect January 1, 2021.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 10 states (and the District of Columbia) now require paid sick leave. No federal laws require paid sick leave.

There will also be a public hearing for LD 369 at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, by the Labor and Housing Committee (Cross Building 202) at the State Capitol Complex in Augusta. Anyone interested in attending should check the Legislature’s Public Hearing and Work Sessions Schedule (https://legislature.maine.gov/legis/bills/phwkSched.html) for any hearing changes.
