The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved the use of SNAP benefits for online purchasing in a pilot program. Households in Maine enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will be able to shop for food online when Maine implements online purchasing with currently authorized SNAP online retailers at a date still to be determined.

SNAP online purchasing is currently available in 47 states at retailers that include Amazon and Walmart.

Until states are prepared to operate the pilot, USDA recommends using other options that retailers may already provide, such as Pay at Pickup (also known as “Click and Collect”), in which SNAP cardholders can shop online and then pay for their purchase using their EBT card at pickup.
