The Maine Forest Service is now accepting applications for Project Canopy Assistance Grants, which are available to state, county and municipal governments, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations for developing and implementing community forestry projects and programs. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 12. All grants require a 50% match from the grant recipient in cash or in-kind services.

All applicants must attend an online grant workshop prior to submitting an application (previous workshop attendees are exempt). The workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 3, at 1 p.m. and will include information on grant writing, project development, sustainable community forestry management and grant administration.

Project Canopy anticipates that $100,000 will be available to support community forestry projects in two categories: planning and education, and planting and maintenance.
