Democrat Jason Putnam of Wiscasset has filed to run against incumbent Rep. Jeff Hanley (R-Pittston) in House District 87, which comprises the towns of Alna, Pittston, Randolph and Wiscasset. A self-employed carpenter, Putnam has served on the Wiscasset school committee for two years and on the Wiscasset ordinance review committee for three years. Putnam says he became particularly engaged in state politics while spending time at the State House during the 2017 state shutdown and during the unsuccessful effort to prevent the repeal of a law to fully fund state education at 55 percent.

“When I get elected I intend to learn as quickly as I can and really try hard not to waste time and their vote,” said Putnam. “If we get a [Democratic] majority that would be great. Maybe we could get something going.”

Putnam said his priorities will be to fully fund the cost of education as is mandated in state law, to make college more accessible and affordable and to preserve the social safety net. He said he would also support a feed-in tariff policy that would allow solar power producers to sell excess power back to the grid at favorable rates rather than simply receiving a credit to purchase grid power.
