Independent Jeff Evangelos of Friendship announced this week that he will be running for his old House District 91 seat, which comprises the towns of Friendship, Waldoboro, Washington, and west Union. A retired public administrator, Evangelos served in the Maine House from 2012 to 2016. He became most known for leading the failed impeachment effort against Gov. Paul LePage in January 2016. He did not seek re-election that year so that he could volunteer for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign.

“Those legislators who have been voting in lock-step with LePage and Trump need to be replaced through the democratic process,” said Evangelos in a statement. “Tax cuts for the wealthy, blocking access to affordable health care, renewable energy, and livable wages are all bedrock right-wing values that need immediate correction. The political pendulum is going to swing back to a more moderate and civil process and I see a wave of change on the horizon. People are fed up with LePage’s and Trump’s antics. Given that I have represented the interests of working people in Maine, I feel I can contribute to this process of change as a legislator.”

Incumbent Republican Abden Simmons of Waldoboro has not yet filed for reelection to House District 91. The deadline for candidates to file with the Secretary of State is March 15.
