Mrs. Martha Elaine (Marshall) Castner, 89, of Rockport, Maine, (formerly of Waterville, Maine, and Boxford, Massachusetts) beloved wife of 67 years to the late Kenneth W. Castner Jr., passed peacefully Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, Massachusetts.

Born in Waterville, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Bertrand and Edna (Burns) Marshall, who both hailed from The Forks, Maine. She was raised and educated in Waterville, and earned her degree from Westbrook College.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Martha devoted herself to her family. She dedicated her life to providing a warm and loving home for her husband and family and took great pride in all of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

Lovingly known as “Mari” to her adoring grandchildren, she set the highest of standards and taught all of her children and grandchildren family values, proper manners, and life lessons that will be passed down and resonate throughout all generations to follow.

Martha and Ken were longtime residents of both Topsfield and Boxford, and then later settled back in to their home state of Maine. Martha was an active volunteer with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She devoted much of her time to raising awareness and raising funds for a cause dear to her heart.

She had a love for the ocean, and enjoyed sailing and spending time on the water with her family. Martha always had an active soul. Passionate about tennis, she organized and hosted annual tennis tournaments in her backyard and loved spending summer afternoons teaching her grandchildren the game. If she wasn’t on the water or the tennis court, she could be found in her gardens digging away or working on her home.

Her caring nature, love of her husband and family, and devotion to the causes she supported will be her legacy. Martha was always welcoming, and loved opening up her home for entertaining both family and friends. She was a very formal and proper woman and never faltered from what was right and wrong. She was a woman with much dignity and pride, never forgot her roots, and instilled her values in her family. She took much pride and joy sharing family history and cherished stories from the past to all of her family.

Martha is survived by her three sons, Kenneth W. Castner III and Nancy Lord of Homer, Alaska; Peter J. Castner and his wife Naomi of Boxford, Massachusetts; and Christopher H. Castner and his wife Pamela of Marblehead, Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Kyle, Chase, Lia, Haley and Marley Castner; her great-granddaughter, Penelope Jane; her sister, Scoop Marden of Waterville, Maine; her step-mother, Cathy Marshall of Waterville, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Alessandra “Allie” Marshall Castner and sister of the late Pauline Perkins.

Her funeral services are private. Assisting the family with the arrangements is the Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple Street (Route 62), Danvers.
