The Strand Theatre in Rockland will offer a free screening of “Like Water for Chocolate” (1992) to its members on Thursday, November 15, at 7 p.m. Current Strand Theatre members, as well as any person who becomes a member prior to the screening, are invited to attend. Memberships may also be purchased in the lobby immediately prior to the show. Based on the novel by Laura Esquival, “Like Water for Chocolate” is a romantic fable from Mexico that centers on a young woman who discovers that her cooking has magical effects after she is thwarted in love because of the time-honored tradition that a family’s youngest daughter must remain unmarried to care for her parents. The film was directed by Alfonso Arau and stars Marco Leonardi, Lumi Cavazos and Regina Torné. It is rated R. The Strand Theatre, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark, became a nonprofit in January 2014 and is now operated by Friends of the Strand Theatre. Memberships, as well as grants, sponsorships and fundraising efforts, help pay the operating expenses for the wide range of cultural and educational programming the theater offers to the community. No regular admission tickets will be available for the screening. For more information about Strand membership, call 701-5053 or email jripley@rocklandstrand.com.
