Metropolitan Opera’s Live-in-HD season of broadcasts from Lincoln Center to the Strand Theatre in Rockland and Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta continues on Saturday, October 27, at 1 p.m. with a simulcast of Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West. An encore broadcast will be presented at the Strand on Tuesday, November 6, at 1 p.m.

Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek is the gun-slinging heroine in Puccini’s romantic epic of the Wild West, with tenor Jonas Kaufmann in the role of the outlaw she loves. Baritone Željko Lucic is the vigilante sheriff Jack Rance, and Marco Armiliato conducts.

Puccini’s “American” opera is based on David Belasco’s play The Girl of the Golden West, which had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910. The drama is set during the California Gold Rush, and the girl of the title is a strong, independent woman determined to win the man she loves. Although it fell out of favor with audiences for a few decades following its original success, Fanciulla is now counted among Puccini’s best works.

Sung in Italian with Met titles in English. Run time is 3 hours 22 minutes, including two 35-minute intermissions. For Strand ticket information, call 594-0070, extension 3, or go to For Lincoln Theater information, go to or call the box office, 563-3424.
