The Strand Theatre, in partnership with the Owls Head Transportation Museum, will offer drive-in movies on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in July beginning July 9. Showtime at the museum campus will be 8:30 p.m.; gates will open at 7:30.

Opening the series will be “Super 8,” a PG-13 sci-fi thriller from Steven Spielberg released in 2011, set in the summer of 1979. In the film, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Elle Fanning, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a train crash while making a Super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events start happening, and a local deputy tries to uncover the truth — something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Tickets, $20 per car, will be available starting at 2 p.m. the day of each show. Tickets can be purchased on the Strand Theatre website, or by calling 594-0070 between 2 and 4 p.m. Availability is limited; early purchase is encouraged.

Staff will wear face masks at all times, patrons must stay in their cars to watch the movie, and cars will be spaced six feet apart. Though a concession stand will not be available, each car will receive a complimentary bag of popcorn, and attendees are welcome to bring their own snacks. Film audio will be broadcast over 87.9 FM; moviegoers can listen with their car radios or with a portable radio.

Rain cancellations will be decided by 2 p.m. on show days. If a cancellation must be made after that, ticketholders will receive a refund.
