This past week I got news that George Holmes had passed away. He is someone I have known both personally and professionally for more than 30 years.

George will be remembered for many things but foremost for me is his style, which he imparted to Main Street in Rockland. At a time when there were empty storefronts and the art scene had yet to arrive, George created a beautiful garden in front of his renovated storefront. He had huge rocks brought in to create a one-of-a-kind flower garden. It was common to see him in his jeweler’s apron, watering his creation, in the early morning.

In more recent times George’s style became more informal and more creative. His gold Lobster Claw clutching a diamond is iconic. Visitors to By George Jewelry, were taken by a custom Harley Davidson motorcycle next to the Jewelry Case. On more than one occasion I was nearby when both front doors swung open as George drove his bike out of the showroom and directly down Tillson Avenue.

Only By George.
