The Dancing Elephant, 14 School Street, Rockland, will host a community kirtan with Ashok Nalamalapu (inset below), Melanie and Cy Scofield (right) and other musicians on Saturday, January 18, at 6 p.m. People of all faiths are welcome; no prior experience is needed. Kirtan is an ancient Indian form of call-and-response chanting. The event is open to the public by donation. Ashok Nalamalapu was born in India and has been leading multi-faith kirtans and playing harmonium since 2011, singing in the traditional Indian raga style. Cy Scofield is a multi-instrumentalist, yoga teacher, and kirtan leader living in Rockport. Melanie Scofield studied music in college, spending two years at The Boston Conservatory studying clarinet and voice and two years at Berklee College of Music studying percussion and world music. After college, she traveled to India for four months to study tabla in Pune with renowned tabla teacher Rajeev Devastali.
