Midcoast Conservancy will host the sixth annual Liberal Cup Biathlon at Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson on Sunday, March 26, starting at 9 a.m. Skiers of all abilities are encouraged to register, individually or as teams, and to compete in costume.

Biathlon is an Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing and target shooting. Air rifles will be provided by the Southern Maine Biathlon Club, and each racer will receive safety training on their use.

Race categories are based on self-selected skill levels, with special categories for youth racers and snowshoe racers. Awards will be given for best costume, best team name, and for youth and high school–age participants. The winning team will be honored at the official Liberal Cup trophy ceremony following the races.

The biathlon was postponed from January due to dangerously icy conditions. In the event of inadequate snow on March 26, racers are asked to indicate at which level they would compete if skiing is replaced with trail running — levels include Novice (“I plan to casually walk/hike the course, take in the sights and enjoy my time in the great outdoors”), Intermediate (“I’ll make an attempt to move along, but no promises. I’ll be somewhat competitive”) and Advanced (“I’m in it to win it, I plan on leaving it all on the trail and sprinting”).

Races will begin about 9 a.m. All day long there will be bonfires, food, and something on tap from the Liberal Cup.  Spectators are encouraged to attend; cowbells will be available to cheer contestants on. The event will be held regardless of weather conditions.
