As an extension of Area Interfaith Outreach’s Weekend Backpack Program, fresh produce has been offered free to families once a month for the past three months at South School in Rockland. Through Good Shepherd Food Bank and AIO, the South School PTF (Parents-Teachers-Friends) has been able to distribute over a ton of produce, including apples, grapes, nectarines, plums, cantaloupes, lettuce, onions, mushrooms, carrots, green peppers, potatoes and cauliflower. A farmers’ market style has been used, with families coming to the school to “shop” at the free produce market. Not all families are able to get to the school, so families who cannot should call or email the PTF to arrange for transportation or delivery.

The last produce distribution for this school year was held recently. Program organizers are interested in keeping the program going during July and August so that families can continue to access free fresh produce while school is not in session, but volunteers are needed. For more information, or to volunteer, email sherrykc@tidewater.net or southschoolptf@gmail.com.
