Jake Barbour Inc. recently completed initial site work at Rockland’s MacDougal Park for the Eliza Steele Memorial Garden, which will honor the founder of Rockland District Nursing Association. Eliza Steele, RN, led the association from 1929 to 1968, building the agency in partnership with the City of Rockland and other civic leaders. The garden design by Jason White of Plants Unlimited envisions a welcoming, tranquil public space incorporating more than 60 varieties in 500 plantings of trees, bushes, perennials and annuals; the cornerstone will be a legacy maple in memory of Steele. The garden will be overseen and maintained by volunteers and supported solely through community donations. A committee is currently collecting funds; the garden is scheduled to open in June. For more information, email garden@rocklanddistrictnursing.org. One of only three remaining district nursing agencies in Maine, RDNA nurses annually visit 200 residents, predominantly seniors, living independently in Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Owls Head, St. George, Cushing, Union and Warren.
