The Damariscotta Mills Alewife Festival committee has decided to cancel the Alewife Festival and the Run with the Alewives road race, originally scheduled for May 23, in accordance with guidelines concerning large gatherings and social distancing. Organizers hope to hold a version of both sometime in the fall and are seeking volunteers for the annual festival.

David Brydges is chairing the committee comprised of local residents and friends of the Damariscotta Mills Fish Ladder Restoration Project. There are many different volunteer opportunities available. To join the planning group or volunteer, phone Brydges at 832-1790 or email db5d@math.ubc.ca. For more information on the Run with the Alewives 5K, or to become a race committee volunteer, email Bob Barkalow at bob.barkalow@gmail.com.

During the spring event, festivalgoers can watch alewives making their way up the restored fish ladder as they traverse from the saltwater bay to the freshwater lake. The stone fish ladder is the centerpiece of Damariscotta Mills.
