Belfast Free Library will host a free Camden Conference presentation by Tom Groening and Jay Davis, “The Demise of the Local Newspaper,” on Tuesday, December 10, at 6:30 p.m. in the Abbott Room. Davis, a founding editor of the Waldo Independent and former editor of The Republican Journal, and Groening, twice editor of The Republican Journal, former editorial-page editor of Bangor Daily News and present editor of Working Waterfront, will discuss the increasingly limited access to local news that U.S. communities are experiencing. Belfast, population about 5,000, once had three weekly newspapers; only one remains. Groening and Davis will parse why that is and how it happened.
