Stephen J. Hornsby, professor of geography and Canadian studies at University of Maine, will present “Cotton’s Ocean: Belfast and the Antebellum Cotton Trade” at Belfast Historical Society’s meeting on Monday, September 23, at 7 p.m. in the Abbott Room at Belfast Free Library. Hornsby will speak about how the transatlantic cotton trade in the mid-19th century affected the growth of shipbuilding and shipping industries in Maine before the Civil War, with a focus on oceanic commerce in Belfast. Hornsby is author and coeditor of several prize-winning books, including “Historical Atlas of Maine.” Belfast Historical Society meetings are open to the public and are held April through October.
