A free two-part “Writing & Speaking to Change the World” workshop will be offered by Linda Buckmaster on Saturdays, January 5 and 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at Belfast Free Library.

Participants will build the skills to write letters to the editor and legislators;  compose effective opinion pieces; create public testimony; and deliver public comments or speeches. The first session will focus on the basics of persuasive writing and speaking, such as audience, persuasive appeals, organization of material, use of evidence and sources, libel and other legal issues, and fitting into time and word limits. The optional second session will give participants the opportunity to build their public speaking skills by practicing the elements of delivery. Attendance at the first is required to participate in the second.

Both workshops will be participatory, and a supportive atmosphere will be maintained so people can try new ways to express their opinions. Participants should bring writing materials with them. For more information, contact Buckmaster at www.lindabuckmaster.com
