Maine Ocean School, Maine’s newest marine-oriented public magnet high school, has been approved by the Maine Department of Education. The school will use space in Penobscot Marine Museum’s Duncan House for administration, office staff and volunteers, and will have access to Hamilton Marine’s Learning Center waterfront areas for hands-on instruction.

Maine Ocean School welcomed its first class of 12 Maine students, grades 9 through 11, on September 4. The school offers specialized tracks in marine science, transportation, engineering, and management. Its mission is to provide a high school education focused on Maine’s maritime connection, with an emphasis on leadership, work ethic and the transferable skills associated with careers involving the ocean. The school is made possible, in part, through the support of Maine Maritime Academy, University of Maine’s Hutchinson Center and School of Marine Sciences, Cianbro, DiveQuest Exploration, Downeast Maritime, and Friends of Sears Island.
