Rockland Public Library is celebrating Poetry Month in September. On Thursday, September 13, at 6:30 p.m., Gary Rainford (pictured) of Swan’s Island will perform and discuss ekphrastic poems from his new book, “Liner Notes,” which showcases 64 musicians — from Ella Fitzgerald to Bjork to Tony Bennett and Blondie — as works of art. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. On Sunday, September 16, at 2 p.m., Rockland’s interim poet laureate Mary Jane Martin will lead a “Playing with Poetry” workshop. There will be joint exercises using words, lines or titles to inspire, and participants can try their hand with poetry cubes and see what happens. On Thursday, September 27, at 6:30 p.m., the Poetry Month finale, Open Mic Night, featuring the library’s Poetry Contest winners, will be held. Refreshments will be served. All are invited to share their poems at the event; poets will each have 10 to 15 minutes of mic time. Musical accompaniment is welcome. Contact Jessie Blanchard at 594-0310 to sign up. All through the month, everyone is invited to play with the library’s Magnetic Poetry Fridge, add a leaf to the PoeTree, and mention their favorite poem (either in person or on the library’s Facebook page).
