River Arts, 241 Route 1, Damariscotta, is seeking artworks for “Black and White,” the gallery’s first show of 2020. The show’s opening reception will be held Saturday, January 11, from 3 to 5 p.m.; the exhibition will run until February 1. The deadline for entry is Saturday, January 4, at 4 p.m. Artists may submit up to three pieces for jurying; the entry fee is $15 for River Arts members; $25 for nonmembers. Entry forms are available at riverartsme.org and at the gallery. All submitted work must be for sale; River Arts will retain a 35 percent commission. Works submitted must use only black and white and mixtures of greys. The subject matter is open and works may be representational or abstract. Mediums may include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, fiber, ceramics and printmaking. Juror for the show will be Ed McCartan (shown), an artist and educator who taught at Emma Willard School and Russell Sage College in Troy, New York, and has taught at various venues in Maine since his retirement. He holds an MFA from SUNY, Albany. McCartan currently teaches art history courses at Midcoast Senior College. Artists will be notified by email of the juror’s selections by Wednesday, January 8.
