Maine Media Workshops + College and the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) announced Daniella Zalcman as winner of the 2017 Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture, on March 29 at The Photography Show at New York’s Pier 94.

Zalcman, a documentary photographer based in London and New York, was selected based on her 10-photograph series “Signs of Your Identity,” from a project to depict survivors of Indian Residential Schools; each image is accompanied by a quote from the subject.

This year’s Newman Prize finalists also included Sophie Barbasch, for her series “Fault Line”; Daniel Coburn, for “The Hereditary Estate”; and Jessica Eve Rattner, for “House of Charm.”

The Newman Prize, an annual juried award of $20,000 to a photographer “whose work demonstrates a compelling new vision in the genre of portraiture,” is administered by Maine Media Workshops + College in Rockport, where Arnold Newman taught for over 30 years.
