River Arts, 170 Main Street in Damariscotta, will host an opening reception for its "Maine Landscape" exhibition on Friday, August 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition will run through September 23. Over 90 artists submitted over 230 works exploring the theme "Maine Landscape." Landscape painter Thomas Crotty, whose work was the subject of a recent retrospective exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art, was the juror for the exhibition. Crotty is also founder and director of the Frost Gully Gallery in Freeport. The submissions reflect the juror's call for work embodying a variety of creative approaches to landscape.

"The Study of Quiescent Love," a short film by Sally Levi, will be shown for the first time during the reception. The film uses landscape as a reflection of the relationship between the spectator and her companion. Levi has received both the Maine Arts Commission Film Fellowship and the Kodak Film Grant two years in a row and was selected as a Jeunes Talents filmmaker by the French government. She is on the film faculty at the Maine Media Workshops, and is co-owner of the production company Film Trolley. At present, Levi divides her time between midcoast Maine and Malmö, Sweden.
