Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School will be offering several group classes this fall beginning in mid-September. All classes meet weekly for one hour and cost $10/class and run for eight-week sessions. Classes take place in the Recital Hall at Bay Chamber Music School, 18 Central Street in Rockport. All group classes are free to students currently enrolled in private lessons at the school. New this year is the Early Childhood Music Program, led by Maya French and Brianna Fischler, both members of the faculty and musicians in Palaver Strings. The class will meet on Mondays beginning September 17. The 10 a.m. class will be oriented to babies and toddlers, and the 11 a.m. class will be for children ages 3 to 5. The cost is $160 for an eight-week session and a financial aid program is available to those who qualify. Early Childhood classes involve singing from different musical cultures, rhythmic chanting, movement, and play. Support from parents and caretakers helps to make it a bonding experience with their children and allows for musical learning at home.

Another new class offered this year is Internal Musicianship with composer and musician John Mehrmann, whose background in multiple instruments, including voice, and his experience as a composer inform his approach to the class, which expands students’ knowledge of how music is made, interpreted and composed. Ability to read music on one’s chosen instrument and a knowledge of key signatures are prerequisites.

Returning programming for the fall session includes Bay Chamber’s Ukulele Group Class with Jeff Weinberger, meeting on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning September 19; the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble; and the monthly Guitar Workshop. Students in the Bay Chamber Jazz Ensemble, led by Mike Whitehead (trumpet) and Nate Martin (bass), will learn simple jazz/blues tunes to explore the key components of jazz: rhythm, harmony, melody, improvisation and group interplay. All instruments and voices are welcome. The Jazz Ensemble meets on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The monthly Guitar Workshop, coached and directed by Jeff Rojo, is open to all ages and offers a chance to play from the classical guitar repertoire with others. The workshop takes place the first Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants are welcome to drop in or sign up in advance.
