| The second annual Leprechaun Lucky 5K will be held Sunday, March 21. Runners and walkers of all abilities, along with their dogs and strollers, are invited to participate in the race, which will start and end on the Rockland waterfront.
The race is a fund-raiser for an orphanage in Malawi, the Little Field Home, which was founded by midcoast native Janet Littlefield.
Local runners Karen Sprague, Andrew Bonarrigo, Russ Wolfertz, Stephanie Almasi, Stephanie Brown, Josh Miramant, Lucas Brower and Reade Brower organized the Leprechaun Lucky. Last year, the race attracted 140 participants. This year, race organizers have pledged to raise $20,000 to provide assistance to the orphanage.
The Leprechaun Lucky will start and end at Almalfi on the Water restaurant, which is located on the boardwalk in the Boston Financial Data Services building (formerly MBNA) on Water Street in Rockland's South End.
The race course includes rolling hills and then hugs the waterfront on the end stretch back to Amalfi, where food and green beer will be available at the end of the race.
First-, second-, and third-place winners will be recognized in all categories, including the "in utero" category for pregnant women. Non-participants can contribute to the cause by sponsoring a runner in the "opt-out" category.
Race start time is 10 a.m. The registration fee is $15. Onsite registration begins at 9 a.m. and pre-registration is available online at www.active.com/running/rockland-me/leprechaun-lucky-5k-2010. Pre-registered participants will receive a Leprechaun Lucky souvenir.
For more information and to register, contact Reade Brower at reade@freepressonline.com or call 691-3510.
