| Bath's Front Street Named One of America's Top 10 Great Streets by American Planning Association | | 10/8/2009 12:15:00 PM | Email this article Print this article | APA Announces 2009s Top 10 Great Places in America The American Planning Association's Great Places in America program announced on Tuesday its 2009 Top 10 Great Neighborhoods, Great Streets, and Great Public Places.
APA's flagship program, Great Places in America, celebrates places of exemplary character, quality, and planning. Places are selected annually and represent the gold standard in terms of having a true sense of place, cultural and historical interest, community involvement, and a vision for tomorrow. APA Great Places "are places where people want to be - not only to visit, but to live and work every day. America's truly great streets, neighborhoods and public spaces are defined by many criteria, including architectural features, accessibility, functionality, and community involvement."
APA singled out Front Street because of the city's long-standing commitment to protect the street's historic and maritime character as well as its economic vitality, and for its unique sense of place, framing views of the Kennebec River and the town's place-defining trademark, the giant red-and-white Bath Iron Works crane.
