| "Cool Congress" October 3 in Augusta | | 10/1/2009 9:43:00 AM | Email this article Print this article | On Saturday, October 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., national, state and local experts will gather for an all-day "Cool Congress" to be held simultaneously at three locations across the state - the University of Maine in Augusta, Fort Kent, and Presque Isle - connected through telecommunications in order to reduce traveling and to connect a greater number of communities.
Bill McKibben will be the keynote speaker - live on itv. McKibben, leader of the worldwide 350.org campaign, is a scholar in residence in the Environmental Studies program at Middlebury College in Vermont and the author of Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, The End of Nature, Fight Global Warming Now, and Enough: Staying Human in an Engineered Age.
The focus of Maine Partners for Cool Communities is solving global warming one Maine community at a time. Begun in 2005, the Cool Communities campaign helps citizens to encourage their cities to implement smart energy solutions and sign the U.S. Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement. Cool Cities (and towns) in Maine include Auburn, Bangor, Bar Harbor,
Bath, Belfast, Biddeford, Bowdoinham, Brunswick, Cranberry Island, Cumberland, Eliot, Fairfield, Falmouth, Freeport, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Kittery, Lewiston, Montville, Orono, Portland, Saco, South Berwick, South Portland, Topsham, Waterville, Winslow, Yarmouth and York.
Conference organizers encourage anyone who is interested in energy and climate change solutions in their community to attend.
Some of the workshops to be offered include "Funding Opportunities for Town Projects," "Municipal Approaches to Energy Efficiency" and "Organizing Locally 101."
The day-long conference will wrap up with a tour of the new Hannaford supermarket in Augusta - the greenest supermarket in the country.
The fee for the conference is $25, which includes coffee, snacks and a catered lunch.
