| Woofstock '09 is set for Saturday, September 12, at the Round Top Farm on Business Route 1 in Damariscotta. Now in its fifth year, Woofstock features seminars and demonstrations presented by area pet professionals, pet services, pet-related vendors, a Family Fun Dog Show, raffles, food and games for pets and children.
Woofstock is a collaboration between The Animal House in Damariscotta and the Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club. Once split into two events, the Pet Education Fair and the Family Fun Dog Show, the two events combined in 2007 to provide one day of festivities for people and their pets. All proceeds from Woofstock benefit area shelters and animal rescues in attendance and Rotary charities.
Woofstock has moved to the Round Top Farm this year due to overwhelming attendance in the past two years (previously it was held at The Lincoln Home in Newcastle). In 2008, over 1,000 people attended and over $7,000 was raised.
The schedule for Woofstock '09 is as follows: 9:30 a.m., gates open; 10 a.m., Parade of Breeds; 10:30 a.m., Flyball Demonstration, Flyball MAINEiacs; 11 a.m., Acupuncture in Companion Animals, Abigail Strobbe, DVM; 11:30 a.m., Agility Demonstration, Canine Connection; noon, Canine Freestyle Demonstration, GoodDogz Training; 12:30 p.m., Storytime for Children; 1 p.m., Family Fun Dog Show, emceed by Jim Cosgrove.
Other scheduled services and events include Canine Good Citizen testing, Therapy Dog International information, a rabies clinic, nail clipping, microchipping, a doggie spa, face painting, and interactive games for your favorite four-legged friend. There will be raffles throughout the day, with products and services provided in part by the 30 vendors scheduled to attend.
Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome. For those who will be bringing their dogs on retractable leads, the organizers have asked that, for the safety of others, attendees lock leashes at a length of no greater than six feet.
The admission fee is "pay-what-you-can," so families can pay whatever they can afford. Woofstock '09 is sponsored by The First, N.A., Down East Magazine, Downeast
Dog News, Newcastle Publick House, Damariscotta Chiropractic and David Chapman Insurance. For more information, visit www.woofstockmaine.com.
Woofstock '09 proceeds will be split between the rescues and shelters scheduled to attend: Life's Little Paws Cocker Spaniel Rescue, Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Humane Society of Knox County, North East Rottweiler Rescue, Lucky Pup Rescue, Maine Greyhound Placement Service, Leos in Need Leonberger Rescue, Australian Shepherd Rescue Placement & Helpline, Coastal Dane Rescue, New England Brittany Rescue, Kennebec Valley Shetland Sheepdog Club & Rescue, New England Border Collie Rescue and Second Chance Boxer Rescue.
