Falwell is the author and illustrator of over 20 picture books and board books for children, including her new book, Mystery Vine.
On Saturday, November 7, from 10 to 11 a.m., Falwell will give a talk for picture book lovers of all ages about her creative process. From ideas inspired by the view from her tree house on Frog Song Pond to finding the right collage materials along with the right words to the many steps of a book's creation, Falwell will share her stories about her 20-year journey in making picture books. Children will be invited to participate with Falwell's collection of puppets and props.
Falwell's books, prints and original illustrations will be for sale through November 28 to benefit the Belfast Free Library. Those who purchase books at Falwell's talk on November 7 will have an opportunity to have her sign them.
The exhibit will include illustrations from the books set on Falwell's pond in Gorham, Scoot! and Turtle Splash. Turtle Splash was awarded a Maine Lupine Honor and was given to over 13,000 Maine children through the Raising Readers program. Nationally the book was recognized as an American Library Association Notable Book, named one of Bank Street Best Books of the Year and a Children's Literature Choice, and given an Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award. Also on display will be illustrations from Falwell's books emphasizing imagination and creativity: Shape Capers, Word Wizard and Butterflies for Kiri. Shape Capers was given to every Maine kindergarten student in the fall of 2007 through the MaineReads program.
