38 Special to Headline Maine Lobster Festival

The band 38 Special was booked to play the Maine Lobster Festival back in 2004, but three days prior to the show, lead singer Donnie Van Zant's father passed away, and the show had to be cancelled. "I had to act quickly, and we got lucky," recalls Chuck Kruger, the festival's longtime entertainment producer. "We got Dickey Betts (formerly of The Allman Brothers Band) to fill in at the very last minute, and it was a great show. We offered refunds, but nobody took them."

This year, the Maine Lobster Festival will try again, with 38 Special scheduled to perform Saturday, August 4. The band's signature blast of Southern rock has earned them many gold and platinum albums and $20-million-plus in record sales over three decades. Opening the show will be Maine's own Mallett Brothers Band, a hybrid of rock and home-grown Americana.

Tickets for the show are on sale now for $30 each, available online at www.mainelobsterfestival.com, by phone at 1-800-LOB-CLAW (service charge may apply), and at the offices of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce, 2 Park Drive in Rockland, or the public landing in Camden.

The 65th annual Maine Lobster Festival, five days of fun and feasting on the coast of Maine, takes place at Harbor Park in Rockland August 1 through 5.
