Pen Bay Diabetes Prevention Program Recognized by CDC

Pen Bay Medical Center’s Diabetes & Nutrition Care Center has earned a Full Recognition rating for its diabetes prevention program, Healthy Lifestyles, from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Healthy Lifestyles focuses on participants’ making modest changes, building healthier eating habits and adding physical activity into their daily life.
Full Recognition is reserved for diabetes prevention programs that meet a set of specified?standards, which include providing a yearlong program with a minimum of 16 weekly core sessions and six follow-up sessions, and average participant weight loss of at least 5 percent of starting body weight achieved by six months and maintained after 12 months.
The Healthy Lifestyles program is one of 75 sites nationwide to receive Full Recognition. There are four programs given Full Recognition in Maine.
