Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA), 21 Winter Street in Rockland, will open its 2016 Biennial Exhibition, showcasing works by 25 artists across Maine, with a public reception on Friday, November 4, from 5 to 8 p.m.
  • An Introduction to Imero Gobbato’s Humbravana
    Camden Public Library will host “A Place Called Humbravana,” an exhibit through November featuring the work of Imero Gobbato (1923–2010) and at

    2 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, “An Introduction to Humbravana” will be presented by Gobbato’s friend and studio assistant, Rose Willson.
  • New Exhibits Opening at Wildlife Refuge Gallery
    The Friends of Maine Coastal Islands invites the public to a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 4, for two artists and a student group with works on exhibit in the art gallery at Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 9 Water Street in Rockland.
  • Open House at Waterfall Arts Center in Belfast October 28
    Waterfall Arts, 256 High Street in Belfast, will mark the grand opening of its new space housing the Young Artists Studio and the Bridge after-school program with an open house on Friday, October 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitors will also be able to tour the center’s fully equipped fine art studios.
  • Six-Week Watercolor Class at Merryspring Starts October 27
    Lesia Sochor will teach a new six-week session of intermediate watercolor classes at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning October 27.

    “The Promise of Tomorrow,” an exhibition of text-based work by Kenny Cole, opens at Perimeter Gallery in Belfast with a reception on Thursday, October 27, from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • “The Forgotten War” Photo Exhibit at Camden Public Library
    Throughout October there will be a photography display in the Picker Room at Camden Public Library titled “The Forgotten War: My Dad’s Perspective,” featuring photos from the Korean War taken by Galen Leavitt.
  • Matisse Art Books Exhibition at PMA
    The Art Books of Henri Matisse, the first solo Matisse exhibition ever to appear at the Portland Museum of Art (PMA), opened last week and will remain on view through December 31.
  • Opening Reception for River Arts’ “Artists’ Choice” Exhibition on October 14
    River Arts, 241 US Route 1 in Damariscotta, will open “Artists’ Choice,” a show with works by over 100 Maine artists, with a reception on Friday, October 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.

    Pastel Painters of Maine will hold its 17th annual International Juried Exhibition at the UNE Art Gallery, 716 Stevens Avenue in Portland, from October 13 to January 7.

  • Reception October 14 for Young Photographers’  Showcase
    Maine Media Gallery, 18 Central Street in Rockport, will present its second annual Young Artist Showcase from September 10 through November 5, with a gallery reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14.
  • CMCA’s New ArtLab Open Studio
    Center for Maine Contemporary Art invites visitors of all ages to drop in to the ArtLab classroom in CMCA’s new building at 21 Winter Street in Rockland to engage in self-directed creative art-making, with free materials and tools provided. CMCA’s new hands-on ArtLab Open Studio program for all ages is offered free of charge with museum admission during regular museum hours.
  • The Maine Lobster Festival is seeking an artist to create the poster for its 70th anniversary festival. The winner will receive a $1,000 commission, and must transfer the rights to the artwork to the Maine Lobster Festival. 
  • CRAFT Gallery, in the courtyard at 12 Elm Street in Rockland, will open “CRAFT Artists in Biennials Past and Present,” its final show for 2016, on Friday, October 7.
  • Penobscot Language School in Rockland invites both established and emerging area artists to exhibit their work at the school’s updated 28 Gay Street facility. Classroom, library and foyer walls are available.
  • “Views of the Natural World” to Open at Frost Gallery October 7
    Jonathan Frost Gallery, at the corner of Main Street and Park Drive in Rockland, will open “Views of the Natural World,” a group show, with an artists’ reception on Friday, October 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.; Steve Lindsay will play jazz piano.
  • Friday’s “Pumpkin Disasters” to Precede Opening of Farnsworth’s “Art of Disaster” Exhibit
    Farnsworth Art Museum will hold a free public First Friday event on October 7 from 5 to 8 p.m., with treats, music, interactive photo displays and multiple “pumpkin disasters,” to mark the museum’s first year on Maine’s Pumpkin Trail and to herald the opening, on Saturday, October 8, of its new “Art of Disaster” exhibition in the Crosman Gallery.
  • Heironymus Bosch–Inspired Group Show at Tidemark Gallery in Waldoboro

  • Exhibition & Sale of Work by Jason Schoener
    Georgetown Historical Society, in association with West Island Gallery and Susie Westly Wren, will host an exhibition and sale of the work of Jason Schoener at the historical society at 20 Bay Point Road in Georgetown on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning Saturday, October 8, and continuing through November 23.
  • First Friday Reception at Art Space in Rockland
    Art Space Gallery, 342 Main Street in Rockland, will hold a reception featuring the work of four of the gallery’s artists from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 7; wine and refreshments will be available.
