Bucksport’s Wednesday on Main summer event program was awarded DownEast Acadia Regional Tourism (DART)’s 2016 Award for Innovation & Creativity at DART’s annual meeting on November 10. Wednesday on Main was created in 2015 as part of a community-wide effort to revitalize Bucksport after the closing of the Verso paper mill.

Wednesday on Main brings entertainment — music, dance, food, movies and lectures — to Bucksport’s Main Street on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at locations including the Alamo Theatre and the Waterfront Gazebo.

The program was grant-funded and supported by the Town of Bucksport and local financial institutions for the 2015 season, and in 2016 it was sponsored by Darling’s of Bangor; audiences make donations at each event.

Other events that attract people to the town include the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce’s Bay Festival and the Bucksport Art Festival. Year-round downtown business activity was reinforced in 2016 by the relocation to Main Street of Huckleberries Card & Gift Shop from Brewer and the opening of Verona Wine & Design, a wine shop and restaurant, a State Farm Insurance agency, and the Lighthouse Arts Gallery, a project of artist Katherine James offering classes, gallery and retail space in a nearly 9,000-square-foot waterfront building.

Demolition of the former Verso mill is planned to be finished in March 2017, after which the property will be available for development. For more information, go to www.bucksportwom.com.
